May Is National Stroke Awareness Month. Did you know that Strokes kill about 140,000 Americans each year? Someone in the US has a stroke every 40 seconds, resulting in more than 795,000 strokes annually!

Today I want to talk about Life after having a stroke, and how a bidet can help with those who have permanent physical side effects after having a stroke. Side effects of strokes can be physical, emotional, cognitive and communicative.

Regaining your independence after having a stroke can be tough, often physical therapy is a huge part of recovery. Paralysis is very common after having a stroke and can make simple daily tasks challenging. Things such as eating, walking or wiping your own bottom after using the bathroom can turn into tasks you are no longer able to do alone. If you can do them alone it can be very difficult and problematic. Not being able to use the bathroom on your own, let’s face it’s uncomfortable, embarrassing, possibly even mortifying to some. One would have to put their pride aside to swallow that reality with many tasks, but toileting is not one of them.

I have seen how hard stroke survivors work to return to completing normal daily tasks. Going to the bathroom and keeping your bum clean should be easier and it can be with the use of a bidet seat. They may need assistance getting up and down however that is where the need of a caretaker can end. The situation is far easier when you have the ability to clean and dry from the press of a button. This not only gives a person back independence but bodily autonomy as well.

On the road to recovery depression and mental disturbances are normal due in part by the damage of the brains grey matter but also the situations a person must endure. With a bidet seat these things can be lessened and give a person a greater sense of accomplishment and independence.

The American Stroke Association which is a division of the American Heart Association has a great website with detailed info about symptoms, risk factors, the different types of strokes help and support.
